Doug was born in 1948 and always said he was born in the wrong generation. He was an independent spirit and followed his own path. He started driving a truck when he was 15 years old. It became his passion and his career. He quit driving in 1997 when he began to have health issues. He always loved old cars and trucks. Instead of buying something new, he would buy and restore an old one and drive it. All his trucking friends knew him as "Hilltopper" and remember his yellow 1966 Peterbilt.

He went into the dirt construction business in 1998 and was known far and wide for his dozier and backhoe work; doing driveways, trailer pads and installing septic systems. He became the district representative of the Alabama Onsite Waste Water Association (AOWA) and remained in the position for over 20 years. He continued to do construction work until a few weeks before his death.

He was a Mason and a Shriner. He loved to ride his motorcycle and was a proud Harley Davidson owner. He had many biking buddies and was very sad when his health prevented him from being able to ride. In his later years he could be seen riding around with his two "canine children"; 2 boxers named Boomer and Baby. He loved his human family, but these two were his favorites. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Lon H. and Nannie Long. He is survived by his wife, Shanna Moucha Long, daughters Terri Nabors (Ed), Melinda Reeves (Marc), step daughters Deidre Richards and Sydney Richards, 3 sons, Jeffrey Long, Joe Long, Carl Harrell and sister Sherron Stanford, 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
