Nina Gail (Shackelford) Prater passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 7th, 2024 at her sister's home in Mount High, Alabama. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL, with Bro. Travis Brown officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Millport City Cemetery.
Gail was born on March 19, 1941 in Millport, Al to Floyd and Gladys Shackelford. She graduated from Millport High School in 1959 and the University of Alabama in 1961. Gail had several jobs as a young adult including working in her parents grocery store, a switchboard operator at a telephone company, and teaching school for a year. For over 30 years, she worked for Alabama Power Company as a home service advisor and later in marketing. She was married to Dan Prater for 39 years. Gail loved children and helped raise Dan's children and grandchildren. She was a second mother to her younger siblings (Vicky and Keith) taking them on many trips and vacations and teaching them how to drive. Gail loved to cook, garden, and travel. She had hundreds of recipes and loved to cook for others. She was constantly taking food to family, friends, and people who were shut-in. She traveled to many places both within the United States and abroad. Gail was a member of Christian Chapel and Millport Church of Christ. She lived an exemplary life of Christian service to others. Gail was a sweet, kind, and generous person who will be missed by family, friends, and her community. She left this world a better place because of the way she lived her life.
Gail is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her brothers Zane(Kim) Shackelford and Keith Shackelford, a sister Vicky(Shane) Wilson, a son Terry(Melanie) Prater, a daughter Gail(Jeff) Lowry, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Sparks, Terry Jones, Dale McGee, Jim Murphy, Larry McLemore, Tony Robertson, and Mike Glasgow.
