On Monday, May 3, 2021, Hazel Lee Owens (Mimi), Kennedy, AL., loving wife, and mother of two children, passed away at the age of 81. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL with Bro. Joel Daniels and Bro. Ed Nabors officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will follow at Kennedy City Cemetery under the direction of Dowdle Funeral Home.
Hazel was born on November 1, 1939 in Fayette Alabama to Howard and Lottie (Walters) Hamner. She married James Earl Owens and raised two children and, along with her husband, owned businesses in Kennedy over the years and retired from Aflac Insurance.
Hazel was a South Lamar sports fan and traveled far and wide to attend basketball, baseball and football games. She was also a passionate Alabama Crimson Tide fan and at home games, could be found in her seat at Bryant-Denney Stadium until her health prevented it.
She is survived by her husband, James Earl Owens, a son, James Rory Owens, a daughter Melisa Owens McRae (Bob), a grand-daughter, Meghan McRae Byrd (Brandon) and two great-grandchildren, Ava James Byrd and Hudson Daniel Byrd, who were the apples of her eye.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jimmy Hamner.
Pallbearers will be Tim Burch, Tony Mordecai, Brandon Byrd, Steve Higdon, Jimmy Thomas, Danny Weathers, Billy Harris and Keith Cannon.
