Karen Lynne (Fields) Nabors left her earthly home on March 1, 2023, at 5:27 p.m. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her residence in Millport, AL. There will be a visitation held on Friday March 3, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be Saturday March 4, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Millport Church of Christ with Bro. Terrance Cleghorn and Bro. Sonny McClellen officiating. Burial will follow at Millport City Cemetery under the direction of Dowdle Funeral Home.
She was born on December 20, 1956, at the clinic in Millport. A lifelong learner, she was Salutatorian of her Millport High School Class of 1975. Karen began her nursing education at Brewer State Community College where she was voted as a member of the Homecoming Court. She continued her nursing degree at The Capstone College of Nursing at The University of Alabama where she received her BSN. She later received her MSN from Mississippi University for Women and her PhD from the University of Alabama. Karen began her nursing career at DCH in Tuscaloosa where she worked for a couple of years before transferring to The Lamar County Convalescent Center to be the Director of Nurses. A few years later, she moved on to Baptist Hospital in Columbus. During her time at Baptist, she worked 3 Main (Pediatrics) and later in the Mother/Baby unit. While at Baptist, she was also a clinical instructor for Mississippi University for Women & Bevill State Community College in Fayette. She began her full-time employment with MUW in 2003 where she served as Clinical Instructor and Professor of Nursing. She also had a stint of working as a Nurse Practitioner for a local neurology clinic and for Dr. Jacob Skiwski at Children's Health Center. She retired from Baptist after 30 years of service but continued to work PRN for a few more years. She was still employed by MUW after receiving her 30 year pin of service in January. Among her hobbies were cooking for her family and members of the community when in need. She also loved to go to yard sales and antique shopping with family and friends. But her most favorite hobby/role was being "Gran" to her grandsons. There weren't many games or events that she missed and supporting her loved ones was one of her greatest joys. She was a very active member of the Millport church of Christ.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Dorothy Fields.
She is survived by her husband and love of her life for 44 years, Kenneth; daughter Kendra (Todd) Spears; son Kellen (Shannon) Nabors; grandsons Tristan, Tucker, Treyson & Topher Boyett, Christian & Tyler Spears and Brycen & Bowen Nabors; sister Eileen (Mike) Anderson; brothers Kevin (Lita) Fields and Darrell (Wendy) Fields and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, friends & co-workers.
Pallbearers will be Tristan Boyett, Tucker Boyett, Treyson Boyett, Topher Boyett, Christian Spears, Tyler Spears, Brycen Nabors, and Bowen Nabors.
