IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Keith
Mordecai
August 3, 1946 – August 26, 2024
Keith Mordecai, a man of deep faith, passed away peacefully in his home the morning of August 26, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at the age of 78. Keith was born on Mud Creek Rd. at a family member's home in Fernbank, AL, the son of Calvin Coolidge and Iva Lois Mordecai. He was raised on a farm in Fernbank, Al. He graduated from trade school following graduation from Millport High School. He married his wife of 55 years, Shirley, in 1969. After living in Fernbank, they moved to Starkville, MS, where Keith worked as a draftsman at Gulf States. After several years, Keith and his family moved to Houston, TX, where they lived for forty years. Keith started his own business and had several employees before working independently until his retirement.
Keith and Shirley had two daughters, Wendy, and Kristy. Keith was an amazing girl dad. He was known to be at every Brownie, Girl Scout, sporting events that his girls were a part of. Keith was a nurturing type and spent quality time with his grandchildren, many times making copies of their hands together on his copy machine and teaching them how to draw. He and Shirley referred to each other as "Songbird" and Keith would bring her a rose everyday there was one growing in the yard. After the girls were grown, Keith and Shirley bought a lake house in Roymayor, TX, where they spent every weekend and made many wonderful friends and memories. The grandkids have precious memories of "Poppy" teaching them how to fish and enjoy the great outdoors.
Keith was also blessed with long lasting friendship, especially his best friend, Lewis Hood. Keith enjoyed fishing, especially with his brother, Kenneth, metal detecting, and animals. He even had pet squirrels he would feed, and one would come up to get a peanut from the palm of his hand. Keith taught himself to play the banjo as a young man and continued to hone his skills right up until his death.
Keith's faith was very important to him. Every morning, he could be found reading his Bible at the kitchen table. He was a true spiritual leader for his family. He told Bible stories to his girls and helped them to memorize verses as well as teach them how to remember the Books of the Bible. He passed many special traditions and beliefs to his children and grandchildren. He also openly shared his faith with others. Keith was a Godly man that was loved by many and will deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mordecai, two daughters Wendy Glasscock and Kristy Knight (Richard), a brother Kenneth Mordecai (Jean) and grandchildren Andrew Miller, Avery DeLong (Chris), Austin Glasscock, Hunter Knight, Sophia Knight and Phoenix Knight, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
