IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lonnie
Gordon
October 16, 1941 – May 8, 2020
Lonnie Ross Gordon, 78, of Vernon, Alabama passed away on May 8, 2020 at his residence. Lonnie was born in Lamar County, AL on October 16, 1941 to parents Duff Clyde Gordon and Kittie Nabors Gordon. Raised in the Millport area, his family farmed during his school years. After finishing school, he went to work at the former Fayette Cotton Mill/ Fruit of the Loom Co. where he worked until age 62. An admirable 40 years spent at one job, he was a top employee.
Lonnie met Linda Ann Guyton in 1961 and they were married on August 3, 1963. Together they raised 4 children and helped raise numerous grandchildren, all of whom can relate many stories of adventures spent outside, working and playing. Lonnie loved being outdoors more than anything; gardening, mowing, cutting fire wood, building and painting things. He was excellent at recycling materials and if it stood still 5 minutes, it would be painted. Grooming their property and lawn was of great importance and it always showed!
After an early retirement, there were much enjoyed RV travels across the country, more time with family and going at his own pace. Which, if you knew Lonnie, it wasn't fast. He always did his best in everything he did.
He was a huge ALABAMA football fan and in the Saban era, was so happy to see the Tide back on top. Even though he would still talk to them on the TV on occasion. Talking more than his usual...we all enjoyed it.
Lonnie was a man of few words. His motto was a John Wayne quote "Talk low and slow and don't say too much". Well Lonnie, husband, father, daddy and POP didn't use many words but showed his metal in his actions. He was married for 56 years, raised a family, worked hard and enjoyed himself through 78 years of a good and healthy life.
Lonnie encountered cancer in September of 2019 and it took him from us on May 8, 2020 but it definitely took him to be with the Lord, there is no doubt. We are all so proud of Pop for being the man that he was. You couldn't have asked for better.
He is survived by his wife Linda, daughters Kittie Duncan, Deidra Gilliland (Danny), Jennifer Vann (Johnny), and son Daren Gordon (Candy). 2 brothers, Dennis Gordon (Kathy) and Roland Gordon (Abby), 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, sisters Billie Jean Robinson and Kathleen Cunningham and one brother, Cleon Gordon and a precious grandson, Tyler Shuford.
A family viewing will take place on May 11, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL with Terry Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery near Vernon, AL. Pallbearers are John Prater, Marty Gottwald, Danny Gilliland, Johnny Vann, Nicholas Gordon and Tim Robinson. Honorary Pallbearers are Danny Stapp, Mark Prater, Gary McKinney and Roy Duckworth.
