Obituary

On May 6, 2026, Louise “Lucy” Turner Freeman of Millport, AL, passed away in the comfort of her home with her loved ones at her side. She was 90 years old.

A Lamar County native, Ms. Lucy was born on January 4, 1936 to Grover andVirginia (Sloan) Turner of Millport, AL. She was the youngest of eight children. In her younger days, Lucy was a cheerleader, later graduating from Millport HighSchool in 1955. She worked beside her high school sweetheart, Clinton “Red” Freeman, for several years at Bosch (United Technology) in Columbus, MS. All the while, she traveled to Aberdeen, MS on Saturdays to attend Vaughn’s Beauty College to earn her cosmetology license. Lucy and Mr. Red were married on June 6, 1957. After a few years in the service of the military, the happy couple settled in a little brick house off Pickens County Road, with “Louise’s Beauty Shop” housed in the rooms just off the carport. Ms. Lucy would spend her life cutting and styling the hair of countless generations of locals that she viewed not just as customers, but as close family friends, working right up until she fully retired at age 86. On May 17, 1965, the Freemans welcomed their only child, a son, Gary Lane Freeman. Ms. Lucy was a devoted and loving mother who valued this role above all else.Mrs. Lucy was a woman of many passions. Not only did she love being a mother and wife, she sought to make the most of her salon, attending conferences to learn the latest techniques and styles. She was deeply devoted to Christ and leda very active church life at Millport Baptist Church. Additionally, Ms. Lucy had a heart for animals. She was an equestrian, possessing a talent and love for working horses. Through many winters, she and her friends often demonstrated their skills while riding in the annual area Christmas parades. And as everyone who loved her knows, even in her last days, you would always find her with a little dog by her side.

Ms. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton “Red” Freeman. She is survived by her loving son, Gary (Malin), her granddaughter, Ashlynn McCain (Hayden), and her grandson, Tucker Freeman, along with several nephews, their wives, and their children. In addition to her beloved Millport Baptist Church family, Ms. Lucy will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by a vast and far-reaching network of friends and loved ones, including the women who dedicated the past several years of their lives taking care of – and caring deeply for – Ms. Lucy: Candi Stewart, Debra Swedenberg, and Lori Dawkins, all three of whom will always be considered members of the Freeman family. To know Ms. Lucy was to love and be loved by her. Her absence will be deeply felt for years to come, but the love she gave will carry on in the memories and laughter she leaves with us all. Pallbearers are Jason Rich, Jim Rich, Greg Turner, Terry Turner, Matthew Byars, and Tucker Freeman. Honorary Pallbearers are the members of Millport BaptistChurch.
