IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret
Shelton
March 17, 1940 – February 18, 2024
We bid farewell to Margaret Elizabeth Shelton, a lifetime resident of Kennedy, Alabama, a woman whose life was dedicated to service, compassion, and community. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL. with Bro. Ray Aldridge officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will follow at Kennedy City Cemetery.
As a longtime member of the Kennedy Baptist Church, Margaret could always be found sitting on the left side, 2nd row of the church, on Sunday mornings. Margaret was not only a faithful member but also a guide for her children, introducing them to the love and teachings of God.
Margaret found her calling as a member of the South Lamar Rescue Squad, where she served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician for many years. Her commitment to this vital role extended beyond simple duties, as she tirelessly worked to raise funds for the squad, which operated solely on donations. Margaret's selfless dedication has made a lasting impact on the community's well-being.
A testament to her spirit, Margaret achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at the age of 63. For eight years, she was employed at the Carrollton Hospital where she devoted herself to caring for others, leaving an enduring legacy of compassion and care in the hearts of those she touched.
Margaret's civic involvement extended to the Town of Kennedy, where she served a term on the Town Council. Her instrumental role in securing a sewer system and establishing the Christmas Tree Lighting event remains a testament to her dedication to community development and the joy she brought to town.
Beyond her professional and civic achievements, Margaret was a culinary artist amongst her family, known for her chicken and dressing and fried chicken. Her tasty dishes were always a highlight at family reunions, where they became cherished traditions.
Margaret is now reunited with her husband Lynn, where it is certain he greeted her with open arms and a playful prank, calling her by her given nickname, "MelViney."
The family would like to express a special thank you to Margaret's daughter Lethia for her exceptional care for mom over the past several years. Her love and dedication provided comfort and support to mom, and for that, we are profoundly grateful.
Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Lynn Shelton, her parents, Bessie and Ira Sansing, and her cherished best friend, Joann Barrett, whom she considered a sister.
She is survived by her children, Lethia Johnson (Mike), Sherry Conde (Noli), Anita Kay Aldridge (Ray) and Annette Weathers (Jonathan). Margaret's legacy lives on through her ten grandchildren, who fondly knew her as "Grandmother", and her seven great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Great Mother".
Pallbearers: Grandsons, Aaron Aldridge, Caleb Aldridge, Daniel Aldridge, Jordan Aldridge, Matt Conde & Shane Bobo
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggest a donation to South Lamar County Rescue Squad in memory of Margaret Shelton.
