Obituary

Mary Kate Shelton, 88, passed away on December 11, 2023 at DCH Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will follow at Andrews Chapel Cemetery.

Mary Kate was born on April 14, 1935 in Pickens County, Alabama to James Belton and Madie Alexander Trapp. She married her sweetheart, Thames "Bit" Shelton and they were married for 47 years. She was a stay-at-home mom to her three children. She was the bookkeeper for her husband's business as well as the church secretary for Liberty Assembly of God. Mary Kate played the piano as well for many, many years. She also taught Sunday School and the children at church always wanted to sit by her to get candy or gum.  Her Christian faith was a great source of strength for her throughout her lifetime. In later years, she kept several of the grandchildren while their parents worked.

Mary Kate was an amazing cook and she enjoyed sharing her recipes with friends. She loved cooking and baking and her family enjoyed many, many delicious meals. At Christmas, she wanted to bake a whole dessert buffet! Some of her expected desserts were red velvet cake, German chocolate cake, sweet potato pie and pecan pies. She loved all children and her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They, in turn, loved her dearly. She had a wonderful reputation and character and everyone always had wonderful things to say about her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant sister and six brothers, Stanley, Olen,  Gann, Ed, J.B., Billy Joe Trapp. She is survived by a son, Randy Shelton (Shamron), and two daughters, Wanda McNees (Mervin Jr.) and Debra Rush (Robert), grandchildren Shelley McNees Moss (Brooks), Jessica McNees Burns (Jonathan), Mary Beth Rush, Amber-Leigh Rush Orth (Jon David), Andrew Shelton and Jackson Shelton, and three great-grandchildren, Holden Burns, Lilly Beth Rush and Briley Kate Burns.

Pallbearers will be Brooks Moss, Jonathan Burns, Holden Burns, Andrew Shelton and Jackson Shelton.
