Mavis Caleena Baswell Black was born December 19, 1935 in Kennedy, AL and went to her heavenly home on March 29, 2020. Mavis was the daughter of the late Oscar Baswell and the late Adine Sprouse Baswell. She leaves behind her husband, John C. Black; they spent the majority of their lives in Lamar County in Millport, AL. She leaves behind one daughter, Marilyn Ann Black Rector (Danny). In addition, Mavis was the proud grandmother to Jessica Danielle Rector Coggins (Kevin) of Daphne, AL. Her pride and joy was being GiGi to her great-grandchildren, Hayden Jayce Coggins, Maxton Rivers Coggins and Millicent Ann Coggins. Mavis is also survived by a brother, John Dewey Baswell, a half-sister, Jimmie Nell McDaniel, a step-sister, Mary Helen Blaylock and step-brother, Paul Johnson and several nieces and nephews.
Mavis worked for several years at the local garment plant in Millport. She was known for being an excellent seamstress. She loved growing and arranging flowers, gardening, cooking, playing guitar, singing, reading and painting. She painted amazing landscapes in acrylics and oils. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother and GiGi. She loved her church family at Millport Church of Christ. She had a positive impact on the lives she touched and will be remembered for her big heart and vivacious personality.

There will be a private family service on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL with a private graveside service at Shiloh Cemetery near Vernon, AL.
