Mr. Richard Varnon, 84, a hometown boy raised and lived in Lamar County all his life, served the county in law enforcement as sheriff during the 70's for 16 years. He stayed in law as he served the town of Millport during Mayor Bobo's terms for 15 1/2 years. Mr. Varnon was a lifetime Mason and Shrinner and super-numeral sheriff for his lifetime.

After retirement in 2004, he and his wife Joyce enjoyed simple country living at their farm at 1000 Mt. Pleasant Church Rd. Mr. Richard had many friends and associates, and was highly respected during his 84 years. His memory will never be forgotton as stories of days past is remembered.He indeed was loved and will be a part of Lamar county history for years to come. Mr. Richard was also a member of Millport Baptist church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Chester Varnon and Mrs. Mildred Richards Varnon, one daughter Bonnie Mitchell and one son-in-law, Chad Scogin.

He left behind a big family, his wife , Joyce Rector Varnon, 3 daughters, Marsha Nichols (Steve), Kay Perkins (David), Robin Varnon Scogin and one step son, Darrell Coleman, 7 grands, and 14 great grands. As his wife and family, we ask your prayers for us as we adjust to a life without his guidance and love. The family would like to thank Dr. William Davis for many years of friendship and acts of kindness.

Visitation will be Monday, July 15, 2019 from 6:00pm till 8:00pm at Dowdle Funeral Home

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 2:00pm at Dowdle Funeral Home.

Interment will be in Millport City Cemetery.

Officiating will be Mr. West Jones, Bro. Nick Cannady and Mr. Derrick Gardner.

Pallbearers will be Lynn Shaw, Danny Shaw, Curtis Graham, Howard Byars, Terry Goodin, Mike Kemp, Bradley Morrison.
