Sherman Johnson, 83, of Millport, AL, passed away on July 3, 2024 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at Dowdle Funeral Home in Millport, AL with Bro. Ed Nabors officiating and Daniel Ponds and Amy Johnson assisting. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the chapel. Burial will follow at Kennedy City Cemetery.
Sherman was born on March 14, 1941, in Cordova, Alabama. At the beginning of his young adulthood, he was a miner in Montana and Wyoming. Later he found the career which he loved with a passion and that was working with heavy equipment as a motor grader operator and foreman building roads, interstates, and subdivisions. He built roads with many companies throughout the years all over the Southeast area from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri and Idaho. He also enjoyed being outdoors, watching Alabama football, and smoking the most delicious meats in his leisure time.
Sherman is survived by his wife, Peggy Bowles Johnson; two sons, Anthony "Tony" Johnson (Amy), Preston Johnson (Chasity); two daughters, Aneitha O'Rear (Tommy), and Awania Feltman (Allen); one sister, Dorothy Thomas, one brother, Steve Johnson (Betty); nine grandchildren, Aaron Johnson (Terina), Andreona Milligan (Kenneth), Summer Butler (Kamron), Austin Feltman (Tamika), Anton Cornelius, Takoda O'Rear, Tyler Johnson, Amber Johnson, and Rylee Johnson, and a hosts of seventeen great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Hermon and Margie Russell Johnson; one son, Sherman Lynn Johnson; sister, Beatrice Vance, and three brothers, James Wilson Johnson, Stillman Johnson, and Travis Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Clark, Alan Edmonson, Jason Fondren, Tim Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Shannon Bowles, and Justin Shaw. A huge thank you to the honorary pallbearers whom are the Baptist Memorial Hospital staff.
