A Family Business

Responding to an increasing need in the area, Mr. Lewis Vaughn Dowdle founded L. V. Dowdle & Son Funeral Home & Ambulance Service in 1925. It was located in downtown Millport and was the first business of its kind in Lamar County. James L. (Jimmy), son of L. V., graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in the Spring of 1942 and joined his father as a licensed embalmer and funeral director. Upon the death of his father, Jimmy became the sole owner and operator of Dowdle Funeral Home. 

The small building soon became inadequate to properly serve the growing population of the county. In 1965, Mr. Dowdle purchased the 2-story, 19th century home still known today as Dowdle Funeral Home. Renovations and additions were completed in 1985. Mr. Dowdle continued his role as sole owner/operator until his death in 1988. His son, George V. Dowdle, began working at the Funeral Home after attending the University of Alabama. He made the decision to continue the family business and became the owner/operator shortly after his father's death.

For more than 20 years, George was married to his wife Kay and together they had two sons, Sam and Jack. After George's passing in 2018, Kay decided to continue his family's legacy by becoming the owner of Dowdle Funeral Home, with plans for their son, Jack, to become the fourth generation owner and director. 

We are proud of the 90 year family history and tradition associated with Dowdle Funeral Home and strive to live up to the standards set by those who have come before us.
